NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Mediterranean Shipping Company’s MSC Judith became the longest container ship ever to dock at the Port of New Orleans when it arrived over the weekend.

Port officials say the 1,066-foot-long, Panamanian-flagged ship docked Saturday at the port’s Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. They say it’s the longest container ship to berth at the port by about 60 feet.

Port President Gary LaGrange says Mediterranean Shipping is one of several major container lines serving the port. Others include Hapag-Lloyd, CMACGM, Maersk, ZIM, Seaboard, CSAV and Libra.

The port is building a new terminal on the Mississippi River to increase its container handling capacity.
