The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it will research whether members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community are being discriminated against when seeking to rent apartments.

HUD posted a 30-day notice in the Federal Register, saying officials want to interview 60 possible renters who identify as LGBT and 15 potential renters who are heterosexual, and see how their experiences go with the housing application process in big cities nationwide, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

“Specifically, we are interested in the manner in which people identify themselves as lesbian, gay or transgender when searching for rental housing,” the notice said. “The full project is to conduct in-person testing for lesbian and gay people in at least two major metropolitan rental markets and transgender people in at least one market.”

The Free Beacon reported that HUD said the study is aimed at uncovering and recording instances of “disparate treatment.”
