CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Former West Virginia Gov. Gaston Caperton is being honored by a nonprofit group that promotes the wellbeing of children.
Caperton will be presented with the West Virginia KIDS COUNT’s “Making West Virginia A Great Place to be a Kid” award. A ceremony is being held Wednesday at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in Charleston.
Caperton served two terms in office starting in 1989 and spent 13 years as president of the College Board.
He was known for his commitment to education as governor, including raising state teachers’ salaries, creating a school building program and putting computers in public school classrooms.
