An FBI agent who tried to board a Pakistan International Airlines flight in Karachi was detained by airport police and taken to court, accused of violating the country’s anti-terrorism laws.
Allegedly, the agent was carrying 15 bullets and a magazine for a 9mm handgun when he boarded the plane, The Washington Post reported. Pakistani laws prohibit passengers from bringing weapons and ammo on commercial flights.
The judge said the agent, whose name has not been released, must stay until at least Saturday to give security officials ample time to investigate, The Post said.
U.S. officials in Washington confirmed the incident occurred and said the agent is assigned to the FBI Miami Field Office but was in Pakistan on a short-term mission. A U.S. official also said that the situation appears to be a mistake and that the agent simply forgot the loaded magazine was in his bag, The Post reported.
