DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - A 20-year-old Detroit area man is suing University of Michigan’s Board of Regents after he was charged out-of-state tuition at the school’s Dearborn campus.

Hussein Berry filed the class-action discrimination lawsuit Wednesday in federal court in Detroit.

The lawsuit says Berry’s understanding is the university required him to pay the more expensive tuition rate for several reasons, including his father’s international business travel.

It also says Berry was classified as a non-resident when he enrolled at Michigan’s Dearborn campus last fall. The Detroit News reports the in-state rate is about $10,800 annually and about $23,400 for non-residents.

Berry moved to Dearborn after immigrating in 2006. He and his parents were naturalized in 2012.

A university spokeswoman says the school is “confident” its “in-state tuition guidelines are appropriate and constitutional.”
