CHICAGO (AP) - The Forest Preserves of Cook County has bought almost 400 acres - its largest purchase of land in nearly a half century.

In a statement, the preserve says a Cook County judge confirmed the judicial sale of a 397-acre equestrian estate in Barrington Hills. The preserve purchased the land known as Horizon Farms for about $14.5 million after a foreclosure.

The land will initially be closed to the public until a site assessment is done and safety improvements are made.

The purchase - the Forest Preserve’s biggest since 1968 - brings its total mass to more than 69,000 acres.
