Congressional Democrats on Wednesday called on their GOP counterparts to end their assault on Obamacare, saying sign-ups totaling 8 million and stories from back home show the war is lost and that it’s time to move on.
“Republicans know that public acceptance and approval of this law will continue to grow,” Sen. Chris Murphy, Connecticut Democrat, said at a press conference alongside three House members from his party.
Republicans are unlikely to put down their swords, though, as they make the law’s rocky rollout and flawed promises the centerpiece of attempts to retake the Senate in midterm elections this November.
Earlier in the day, House Republicans pressed top health insurers on whether premiums will rise, if the HealthCare.gov website that serves two-thirds of the states is completely built and how many people lost their plans because of Obamacare’s new coverage requirements.
Democrats have urged the public to view the law as a work in progress that will accrue positive results over time, although they are celebrating early returns.
Mr. Murphy said they can have it both ways, deeming the law a “short-term success and a long-term home run.”
