NEW YORK (AP) - Christie’s auction house is voluntarily paying to return an ancient statue looted in the 1970s from a temple in Cambodia.
The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1lXLEeQ ) says Christie’s sold the 10th-century statue in 2009 but bought it back after officials determined it had been looted.
A Christie’s spokeswoman says the unidentified buyer was cooperative and pleased with the outcome.
Cambodia’s secretary of state praised Christie’s for “a very generous approach” to the case.
The Times says the return coincides with a ceremony scheduled for Wednesday in New York at which federal officials will return another looted statue to Cambodia that Sotheby’s had pulled from a sale in 2011.
