SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego lifeguards have rescued six athletes whose outrigger canoe flipped over in rough waters.

Lifeguard Sgt. Travis Gleason tells U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1uypxzF) the canoe with eight people aboard capsized in the Mission Bay channel on Tuesday night.

Gleason says one person stayed with the boat, one was able to swim to the nearby jetty, and the other six were pulled from the water by lifeguards, who reached them with two boats and two Jet-Ski-style personal watercraft.

The crew from the canoe, which had been in the Bay with another outrigger group, had called to the jetty for someone to get help.

The canoe was towed back into Mission Bay.

No one was injured.
