ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The University of North Carolina Asheville has a new interim provost.

Chancellor Anne Ponder announced Monday that Joseph Urgo will take the position July 1. Urgo is a senior fellow at the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Provost Jane Fernandes is leaving Asheville to become president of Guilford College.

Urgo was president of St. Mary’s College in Maryland from 2010 to 2013.

He also has worked at Hamilton College, the University of Mississippi, Bryant College, Vanderbilt University and Syracuse University.

The school is conducting a national search for its next chancellor. Ponder is retiring at the end of July.
