FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) - A St. Louis County man struck and killed his twin brother with an SUV as he tried to break up a fight during a pickup basketball game.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1g5i6GO ) reports that 24-year-old Marlon Horton died Sunday night in Florissant.
The brothers and two other men were playing basketball at a middle school when a fight broke out. Police say Horton’s brother got into his SUV and drove toward the fight, honking his horn, in an apparent attempt to break it up.
The driver told police he lost control and struck his twin. Horton was crushed between the vehicle and a tree.
Florissant officer Andy Haarmann says the brother was “very remorseful.” He was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, but no charges were filed as of Tuesday morning.
Police aren’t sure what started the fight and are investigating whether the SUV driver was trying to defend his brother. No one else was hurt.
Witnesses told the newspaper that the brother was weeping after the incident, telling his brother, “Please, don’t go” and “I love you.”
The twins grew up in a neighborhood near the basketball court. Their father, Michael Horton, said they were good kids who didn’t get into trouble.
“I’ve been warning them the past 12 years, just stay away from that basketball court because there is always something going on over there,” he said.
But Marlon Horton loved to play basketball, his father said. He worked as a delivery driver for a store that sells and leases furniture, electronics and appliances.
Michael Horton said the brother was too distraught to talk about the incident.
“We are not going to pressure him,” the father said. “He loved his brother dearly.”
