PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a woman shot and wounded a man who allegedly was trying to break into her west Phoenix home with a gardening tool.

Phoenix police didn’t immediately release the name of the 20-year-old man Tuesday. They say he’ll face charges after he’s released from a hospital.

Police say the 47-year-old homeowner called police before the intruder managed to get inside the house about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The man allegedly smashed the rear arcadia door with a garden weeding tool.

Police say the woman armed herself with a handgun and hid in the bathroom.

They say the intruder went into the bathroom and punching the woman in the face several times before she fired off one shot and he fell to the floor.

The man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
