ALLENTOWN, N.J. (AP) - Peter G. Callas Jr., a former managing editor of The Times of Trenton, has died.

The newspaper said Callas, who was 54, died Saturday (https://bit.ly/RkUXKh ) after being stricken ill. He had suffered from muscular dystrophy for more than 40 years, and was a strong advocate for people with disabilities.

Callas joined the staff of The Times as a copy editor in 1984, and held a variety of positions before becoming managing editor in 1997. He retired in 2009.

After his retirement, he started a public relations business which he operated from his home in Allentown.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Peppler Funeral Home in Allentown.
