COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A central Ohio man who had been smoking marijuana before he hit a police officer and another person standing on a highway ramp at an accident scene has been sentenced to more than three years behind bars.

A Franklin County judge sentenced 43-year-old Alphonso Jennings III to the maximum three years in prison and an additional six months in jail Monday for the July 15, 2012, crash on a freeway ramp in north Columbus.

The Columbus Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1sfmslM ) reports that Sgt. Steve Livingston was thrown 45 feet through the air. The 43-year-old officer endured 18 surgeries. A woman also hit suffered a broken hip.

Jennings pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated vehicular assault and one count of operating a motor vehicle while impaired. He apologized in court.
