SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - An Orange County man who stole more than $280,000 from a blind and deaf widow with dementia has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1qas8Qu) 44-year-old John Thomas Windsor used the money to buy cars, a classic record collection and a Tiffany engagement ring.

Windsor had pleaded guilty to multiple felonies including residential burglary and caretaker theft from an elder. At his sentencing Monday, he was ordered to pay $296,000 in restitution and fined more than $592,000.

Windsor met the elderly woman through his mother who was her live-in caretaker at the widow’s Newport Beach home.

In 2007 Windsor, who was on parole in Vermont, moved into the woman’s home without her knowledge and began depleting her bank accounts.

The victim died in 2009 at age 99.
