SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A Spokane County sheriff’s spokesman says a man fatally shot after he drove through a police barricade at a homicide scene and jumped from a truck holding what appeared to be a gun was really carrying a pellet gun.

The Spokesman-Review reports (https://is.gd/Gbmyrp) that sheriff’s Deputy Craig Chamberlin says what Jeremy Arnold had in his hand on April 29 “looked like a legitimate handgun” and Spokane city officers had “about two seconds to make a decision” to fire. The sheriff’s department is leading the investigation into Arnold’s shooting. A TV station captured the encounter on video.

At the time, Arnold was a person of interest in the death of 46-year-old Tracy Fergerstrom, who was found stabbed inside a house.

The three Spokane police officers who fired at Arnold had more than half a century of combined experience on the force.
