LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A former Deming-based federal law enforcement officer has been sentenced to prison for stealing cash, a gun and a car.

A U.S. District Court judge in Las Cruces on Tuesday also sentenced 43-year-old Armando Perales Jr. to serve three years on supervised release and to pay a fine of $3,000 and restitution of $5,000.

Perales was an officer with a Deming-based border operations task force and also cross-designated as a Customs officer.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Colorado says Perales pleaded guilty to theft from programs receiving federal funds of over $10,000.

The office say $5,000 in cash and a 1993 Chevrolet Camaro were taken from people who had been arrested and that an AR-15 carbine was taken from a person staying at a home searched for drugs.
