ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Ann Arbor City Council has approved a new hiring policy removing references to past felony convictions from most employment applications for city jobs.
The Ann Arbor News reports (https://bit.ly/1rYzbY5 ) exceptions to the change approved unanimously Monday night are for police and fire department applicants.
Council member Jack Eaton, one of the co-sponsors of the resolution establishing the new policy, says a felony conviction shouldn’t prevent a person from doing some city jobs. He says he believes the “best anti-crime program is a good job.”
Officials say those seeking jobs often feel turned away before they apply when they are required to disclose a felony conviction. Council says a prior criminal conviction won’t bar employment unless there’s a direct correlation between the conviction and the requirements of the job.
