CORNELIUS, N.C. (AP) - Mitt Romney has endorsed Thom Tillis on the eve of the U.S. Senate primary election in North Carolina.
The 2012 Republican presidential nominee announced Monday his support for the state House speaker in Tuesday’s crowded GOP field.
Romney says in an email message that Tillis is a conservative who solved problems while in Raleigh and he thinks Tillis will do the same in Washington. North Carolina was good to Romney in 2012. It was one battleground state he won over Democrat Barack Obama.
The endorsement is the latest reinforcing Tillis as the favorite of the Republican establishment and contrasts him with obstetrician Greg Brannon. Brannon urged people in 2012 not to vote for Romney because he said Romney was too moderate.
Eight Republicans are seeking the party’s nomination.
