CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Police and deputies across Wyoming could face an increase in crime as summer approaches.
The Casper Star-Tribune reported Monday (https://tinyurl.com/ljpocp4 ) that the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police recorded about 1,250 arrests in April 2013, compared with 1,550 in July.
That roughly mirrors the nationwide trend.
Art Washut, head of Casper College’s Criminal Justice Department, says one factor in the summertime increase is that crime-prone 14- to 25-year-olds are out of school.
Washut says alcohol consumption also increases in the summer, which might lead to more arrests. In 2013, 77 percent of the 19,000 arrests in Wyoming involved alcohol or drugs.
Washut says studies show arrest numbers often increase with the temperatures, but only until they hit the mid-80s, and then they begin to decline.
