Oregon State University fired men’s basketball coach Craig Robinson, the brother-in-law of President Obama, on Sunday night, according to a report by Sports Illustrated.
The termination comes six weeks after OSU’s final game, making the development highly unusual, CBS Sports notes. Mr. Robinson and his staff were out recruiting as they normally would as recently as last week.
The older brother to the first lady had reportedly received support from Oregon State’s administration. He has three more years remaining on his contract and the university is expected to owe him more than $4 million, Sports Illustrated reported.
From the report: “Robinson began his tenure with a 18-win season in 2008-09, as he took a team that had lost 21 consecutive Pac-10 games and put the program on the right track. That coincided with the election campaign of Obama, as Robinson introduced his sister, Michelle Obama, at the Democratic National convention in the summer of 2008. From there, Robinson had uneven results at one of the Pac-12’s hardest jobs. He’s finished with a 39-69 record in Pac-12 play.”
