MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) - State police say cellphone use may have contributed to a two-vehicle fatal crash on La. 70 in St. Martin Parish that led to the death of a 24-year-old Sulphur man.
Trooper Stephen Hammons tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1sat9Wi ) Charles Parker III died Saturday from injuries sustained after his SUV heading south on La. 70 crossed the centerline and struck the side of a northbound 18-wheeler driven by 50-year-old Michael Smith, of Morgan City.
Hammons says Parker may have been distracted by his cellphone.
He says Parker was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith sustained minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
