CHICAGO (AP) - A Cook County judge has reduced bond for a Chicago man charged in a traffic accident that killed a University of Chicago Law School student.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1j3UG9J ) a judge on Monday reduced 23-year-old Erik Johnson’s bond to $500,000 from the original $750,000. Johnson is charged with drunken driving counts after authorities say he drove his SUV the wrong way on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive, slamming into a taxi. Authorities say Johnson’s blood alcohol level was 0.195, or more than twice the legal limit.
Friday’s crash killed 26-year-old Laura Anne LaPlante from Hancock, New Hampshire. LaPlante was on track to graduate this summer.
Johnson’s father spoke to reporters Sunday, calling the crash a “tragic incident.”
Another passenger in the cab, as well as the driver, also were injured.
