NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Shavar (shah-VAHR’) Jeffries has snagged a celebrity endorsement in his bid to become Newark’s next mayor.

Actress Eva Longoria came to Newark’s largest city Monday to express her support for Jeffries, the former assistant attorney general who is running against Newark city councilman Ras Baraka.

Former councilman Luis Quintana has served as mayor since last year, after Cory Booker stepped down following a successful campaign for U.S. Senate.

During her visit to Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, Longoria said she’s supporting Jeffries because he has the experience and ideas to turn around the city’s troubled school district, which is under state control.

The former “Desperate Housewives” star is active politically and spoke during the 2012 Democratic convention. She runs a foundation that encourages Latinas through education and entrepreneurship.
