Homeless staying at a shelter in North Hollywood lost what little they owned in a fire that completely destroyed the facility over the weekend.
The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission was declared a total loss, and more than 20 were sent packing, after an early morning fire gutted the place, fire officials said, NBC Los Angeles reported.
“This is all I had,” Nancy Arias, one of the shelter dwellers, told the local media outlet. “This is my bed. This is my home. This is my children’s things.”
She was able to find temporary shelter at a Red Cross facility.
The shelter director, Wade Trimmer, estimated damages at about $2 million. But nobody was injured, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Meanwhile, investigators are still seeking the cause of the flame, which took more than hour to douse.
