LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - A West Texas official says three people were killed when the van they were in collided with an 18-wheeler carrying a flammable liquid, triggering a fire that burned the two vehicles for hours.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Bryan Witt says the identities and hometowns of those killed in the accident early Monday are not yet known. The driver of the tractor-trailer was conscious and in stable condition at a Lubbock hospital.
Investigators believe the driver of the van did not yield at a stop sign before crossing U.S. 87 just south of Lubbock.
Witt says the fire burned for about five hours and road repairs will be needed.
Traffic was still being diverted around the accident site late Monday morning.
