COVINGTON, La. (AP) - St. Tammany parish voters have elected a retired emergency room physician to replace convicted former coroner Peter Galvan.

Dr. Charles Preston defeated Dr. Leanne Truehart, a psychiatrist and deputy coroner. He got 58 percent of the vote to Truehart’s 42 percent in Saturday’s special election.

Dr. Premod Menon has been serving as interim coroner since Galvan resigned in October. Galvan later went to prison after pleading guilty to one count of conspiring to steal public funds.

Preston says he will be open and committed to doing the job right.
