MANASSAS, Va. (AP) - A 100-year-old water tower in Manassas will stand for at least another six months.
The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/SpIp5s ) reports the Manassas City Council will wait that long before discussing again whether to demolish the blue tower that says “Welcome to Manassas.” The tower costs an estimated $10,000 a year to operate but processes only a tiny fraction of the city’s water.
City water officials sought permission to tear down the structure but the city’s architectural review board contested the utility’s request.
Now it’s up to the council to decide whether it’s worth saving the structure for its historic value.
The city’s fire department has expressed interest in the land the tower sits on, which is adjacent to a fire station.
