DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A longtime editor at the Des Moines Register has died less than two weeks after suffering a heart attack.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1s8cUJf ) 55-year-old Randy Brubaker died Saturday. He was senior news director at the newspaper and had held several leadership roles since 1983.

Register President and Publisher Rick Green says Brubaker was a leader and mentor who loved to see reporters help readers. Green says the death is especially sad because Brubaker’s wife died suddenly in January.

Brubaker suffered a heart attack at home last month, and doctors inserted a stent to improve blood flow. He had been scheduled to return to work Monday.

Brubaker grew up in Waterloo and graduated from Wartburg College in 1980.

Brubaker is survived by his two sons. Funeral arrangements are pending.
