CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Democrats are sending a prosecutor to Raleigh to fill the state Senate seat formerly held by the lawmaker appointed as Charlotte’s mayor.
Mecklenburg County’s Democratic Party selected Jeff Jackson to fill new Mayor Dan Clodfelter’s former Senate spot. Clodfelter stepped down in April to take over as Charlotte’s mayor after Patrick Cannon resigned due to his arrest on federal corruption charges.
Jackson is a 31-year-old assistant district attorney in Gaston County. He will serve the rest of Clodfelter’s current term this year and take the new Charlotte mayor’s his place on the November ballot. Jackson is unopposed for a full two-year term.
Jackson will be one of 17 Democrats in the 50-seat Senate when the annual legislative session begins on May 14.
