CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Andrew Moore set a postseason school record with 14 strikeouts and top national seed Oregon State got past North Dakota State 2-1 Friday night in the NCAA Corvallis regional.
Oregon State (43-12) got a two-out solo home run from Dylan Davis to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Oregon State’s bullpen took over when Moore finished after eight to shut down the Bisons and seal the victory.
“I felt like I located the fastball really well and that’s the best my curveball and slider have been all year,” Moore said.
Moore (6-5) was dominant after giving up a solo home run to Kyle Kleinendorst in the second inning. He gave up four hits and North Dakota State did not advance a runner past second base after the second inning.
Oregon State tied it at 1 on Tyler Morrison’s RBI groundout in the second inning. But the Beavers struggled offensively stranding 11 base runners and finishing 0-12 with runners in scoring position.
“We did not do the things we need to do offensively we needed to win but fortunately we pitched and we defended and got a win,” Oregon State coach Pat Casey said.
Kleinendorst went 2-4 with an RBI for North Dakota State (25-25). The Bisons were making their first regional appearance since joining Division I in 2004.
David Ernst (4-5) gave up two runs on 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings in the loss. He struck out six.
Oregon State is now 13-0 in regional play at home in the current format. The Beavers will play UC Irvine in the double-elimination regional on Saturday night, while the Bison face UNLV.
