NEW ORLEANS  — Sen. Ted Cruz won the Republican Leadership Conference’s 2014 presidential preference straw poll, cementing his status as one of the darlings of grassroots activists.

Mr. Cruz captured 30 percent of the vote, followed by famed neurosurgeon Ben Carson, with 29 percent of the vote and Sen. Rand Paul with 10 percent of the vote.

Results for the poll were as follows:


• Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — 30.33
• Ben Carson — 29.38 
• Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul — 10.43
• Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — 5.06
• Texas Gov. Rick Perry — 4.90 
• Florida Rep. Curt Clawson (write-in) 4.58
• Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — 4.42
• Florida Sen. Marco Rubio — 3.32
• Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum — 2.37 
• Wisconsin Rep Paul Ryan — 2.05 percent
• Former Florida Rep. Allen West (write-in) — 2.05
• New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie — 1.11
