RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Two churches in the Raleigh area have joined together to open a small nonprofit grocery store in a so-called food desert - an area where there are no grocery stores nearby.

The News & Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1jHxBoU ) the Galley Grocery Store opened recently in southeast Raleigh on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The 900-square-foot store offers fruits and vegetables, canned foods and dairy and baking supplies. Organizers hope it will provide residents better food choices than are offered at the convenience stores that are in the area.

The store is a joint effort of the Ship of Zion church, which is a few blocks away, and the Hope Community Church in West Raleigh.

The churches began the project after two Kroger stores left the neighborhood about 18 months ago.
