MIAMI (AP) - Coders and reporters in Miami will join forces in the first Pan Latin Hacks/Hackers data journalism event.
The hemisphere-wide hackathon’s theme: the money trail. Organizers say Saturday’s event seeks to encourage the grass-roots, civic-minded Hacks/Hackers groups to work across borders in Latin America. It’s also an acknowledgement that increasingly journalists will need to work across traditional geopolitical limits to track where governments and corporations are channeling their funds.
The event will take place simultaneously in more than a dozen Latin American cities. Miami Hacks/Hackers co-founder Dan Grech says since Latin American cash, both dirty and clean, ends up flowing through Miami, it’s essential the city play a role in such efforts too.
The free, daylong event will be hosted at Univision and Fusion’s Newsport headquarters. Registration is required.
