LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Seth Harrison was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Michael Strentz’s early three-run homer helped Louisiana-Lafayette beat San Diego State 9-2 in an NCAA tournament elimination game Saturday, keeping the nation’s No. 1-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns alive in the Lafayette regional.
Carson Baranik (11-1) went 6 1-3 innings and combined with reliever Matt Plitt on an eight-hitter.
Tyler Girouard’s single scored Ryan Leonards in the first for ULL (54-8), and Strentz’s homer to left the next inning gave the Cajuns a 4-0 lead.
Blake Trahan followed three batters later in the second with an RBI single that chased SDSU starter Bubba Derby (8-4) as Louisiana-Lafayette batted around.
SDSU (42-21) did get one back with Brad Haynal’s RBI-triple in the fourth, and another in the fifth.
But UL made it 7-1 with two in the top of the fifth, when Harrison tripled in Caleb Adams and scored on Dylan Butler’s suicide sacrifice squeeze.
The Cajuns tacked on two more in the sixth, including Harrison’s two-out, bases-loaded RBI bunt that put ULL up 9-2. ULL benefited from one double play in the seventh inning and another in the eighth, both initiated by third baseman Leonards.
With 15 Saturday, the Cajuns produced their 38th game this season with 10-plus hits.
