GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Thousands of Guilford County Schools workers were without their paychecks after a problem prevented the district payroll from being processed.
Officials don’t know if it was a technical problem or human error that meant an estimated 10,000 workers were initially not paid on Friday.
District officials say they submitted the almost $22 million to cover payroll to Bank of America on Wednesday. But the money didn’t show up in workers’ accounts on Friday.
Then employees flooded the district phones asking where their money was.
Depending on where they do their banking, some workers were able to get their money by late Friday. Others were told they could go by the district offices and pick up a paper check on Saturday. But still others may have to wait until Monday for their pay.
“While we are still investigating exactly what happened, the bottom line is that our employees’ paychecks were not available when they should have been, and for that, I sincerely apologize,” district Superintendent Mo Green said in a news release.
Bank of America issued a statement saying it had contacted 10 banks where most of the workers have their accounts and told them about the problem. Bank of America handles the accounts for about 1,200 of the district employees.
About 5,600 employees have accounts with the State Employee Credit Union. Those workers were able to get their pay by late Friday.
