WASHINGTON (AP) - More than half of her colleagues on the D.C. Council will join the city’s Democratic mayoral nominee Muriel Bowser at a downtown fundraiser.

Bowser’s campaign says councilmembers Yvette Alexander, Marion Barry, Anita Bonds, Jack Evans, Kenyan McDuffie, Vincent Orange and Tommy Wells will attend Saturday evening’s event, which is intended to promote Democratic Party unity.

Bowser defeated incumbent Vincent Gray along with Evans, Orange and Wells in the April Democratic primary.

Three out of four registered voters in the District of Columbia are Democrats, making Bowser the front-runner in the November general election. But she faces a credible challenger in Councilmember David Catania, an independent who has been courting Democratic support by touting his progressive record.
