COLLINS, Miss. (AP) - A U.S. Department of Agriculture administrative judge has upheld the decision to cancel the Collins Zoo’s license. The judge also fined the owners $39,325.
Zoo owner Betty White tells The Hattiesburg American (https://hatne.ws/1pHiT6o ) that she and her husband, Gus, will appeal. She says they have not yet seen the May 13 decision but she is looking for an attorney.
The agency revoked the zoo’s license in April 2013.
Over the years the USDA has cited the Whites for a wide range of violations to include failing to safely handle animals, failure to provide adequate veterinarian care and cages holding dangerous animals lacking structural integrity.
In January 2012, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks seized tigers, cougars, leopards, a monkey, and some wolves from the zoo.
