SAN DIEGO (AP) - A whale carcass that washed up twice on the San Diego coast has been cut up and parts will be used for research, display and even to build homes.

U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1lZfzjm ) says Friday that the whale, estimated at 60 to 75 feet, was towed out to sea last week after it was found beached on May 19 near a wastewater treatment plant.

However, the towline broke and the carcass washed up again last weekend at Border Field State Park.

Park officials say the decaying whale was carted out using construction equipment on Thursday and Friday. The skull went to San Diego State University for study and may eventually be displayed.

Members of local Native American tribes took some ribs to use for traditional whale bone houses.
