RICHMOND, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say mechanical failure caused a tractor trailer hauling cheese to catch fire on Interstate 89 north in Richmond.
Police say the driver was able to pull over and unhitch the burning trailer from the tractor on Friday morning. He was not hurt but was taken to the hospital for a medical condition he suffered after disconnecting the trailer.
The Boar’s Head truck was hauling about 34,000 pounds of cheese when it caught fire, causing the interstate to be closed for about an hour.
Police say the trailer and its contents were destroyed in the fire.
Authorities say one lane of the northbound interstate in Richmond is closed. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and can expect delays well into the afternoon.
