BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Sen. Bernie Sanders, chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, says the nation’s veterans need quality health care and they need to get it a timely manner.

Sanders told reporters on Friday that he was “saddened” by the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki.

Shinseki resigned amid growing evidence of patient delays and cover-ups at the VA, taking blame for what he decried as a “lack of integrity” in the sprawling health care system for the nation’s military veterans.

Sanders spoke after participating in a Memorial Day service in Battery Park in Burlington.

He said the problems at a Phoenix facility and elsewhere are reprehensible and “we have got to make sure that veterans not only get quality health care, they get it in a timely manner.”
