BOSTON (AP) - Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell has been ejected in the first inning of Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay.
Farrell came out of the dugout after Rays pitcher David Price hit David Ortiz on the hip with his first pitch to the Boston slugger.
Home plate umpire Dan Bellino immediately issued a warning to both benches. That got Farrell out of the dugout apparently upset that the Red Sox were also warned because of Price’s pitch, which drew a long stare from Ortiz as he lingered at home plate before making his way to first.
Farrell only said a few words before Bellino signaled the ejection, which set off Farrell even more. He continued yelling at Bellino until crew chief Jeff Kellogg came over from third base and Farrell eventually headed to the clubhouse.
During the argument, Boston left fielder Jonny Gomes and Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria appeared to be exchanging words at home plate before Longoria turned and walked back to third.
