President Obama will meet Ukraine’s newly elected president Wednesday in Poland during a trip to reassure allies worried about Russia’s aggression.
The White House announced the meeting Friday while providing details of Mr. Obama’s trip, which will include a visit to Normandy in France to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in World War II.
Mr. Obama will meet Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko, a billionaire confectioner, in Warsaw. The president also will give a speech to mark the 25th anniversary of Poland’s emergence from communist rule.
Mr. Obama later plans to meet Group of Seven leaders in Brussels, a conference that will shut out Russian President Vladimir Putin due to Russia’s annexation of the Crimea region from Ukraine. Mr. Putin also plans to be in Normandy, but White House officials said there are no plans for the two leaders to meet formally.
