AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) - South Africa and New Zealand played out a timid 0-0 draw in a football friendly on Friday, allowing the under-strength South Africans to stay ueaten in back-to-back matches in Australia and New Zealand.

After Monday’s 1-1 draw with Australia, South Africa - weakened by the absence of nine top players - produced another sound, well-organized performance but were unable to break down the defense of a young New Zealand team.

New Zealand was without five first-choice players and had only one player - goalkeeper Glen Moss - remaining from its last meeting with South Africa at the Confederations Cup in 2009.

South Africa had its best chance in the 31st minute when Reneilwe Letsholonyane crashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box into the crossbar. Moss was otherwise untroubled.
