LOS ANGELES (AP) - A new treatment plant that uses ultraviolet light to disinfect water has opened in Los Angeles, at a final cost of about $40 million more than the original estimate.
The Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/SYkV7z ) the Dr. Pankaj Parekh Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility in Sylmar was dedicated on Thursday.
The plant took about three years and $100 million to build - far more than the $60 million price tag given at the April 2011 groundbreaking ceremony.
The newspaper says it is the largest such facility in the western United States, with 14 UV reactors that can treat 600 million gallons of water per day.
The plant is dedicated to the former director of water quality at the Department of Water and Power who championed UV disinfection technology.
