SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano is out of his second straight game for the Seattle Mariners with a hand contusion.
Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon did not specify which hand Cano injured, but did not consider it serious. He said Cano was day-to-day. Cano had appeared in all 52 of Seattle’s games before being scratched on Thursday night. He’s appeared in at least 159 games in each of the past seven seasons.
Cano said he felt better than he did on Thursday, but said it was up to McClendon if he would be back in the lineup on Saturday.
Seattle selected veteran outfielder Endy Chavez from Triple-A Tacoma before Friday’s series opener against Detroit. Chavez was a late addition to the lineup and batted leadoff. The Mariners cleared a roster spot by optioning right-hander Brandon Maurer to Tacoma. Maurer had been knocked around in his previous two starts, giving up 12 hits and 11 earned runs. He’s 1-4 with a 7.52 ERA in seven starts this season.
Seattle transferred right-hander Blake Beavan to the 60-day DL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Chavez. Beavan has been sidelined with right shoulder tendinitis.
