MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - We know why the chicken crossed the road. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says lots of other animals cross the road this time of year to breed.
Frogs, salamanders and turtles are among the animals likely to be seen in roads near wetlands, ponds and vernal pools in the coming weeks. Officials are urging drivers to slow down, be aware of what’s ahead and take alternate routes when possible.
They say that’s especially true on rainy spring nights, when amphibians are on the move.
Drivers who see a turtle in the road are welcome to help it across if it’s safe to do so. But if it’s a snapping turtle the best bet is to push it from behind with a shovel.
