MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The Montana Department of Revenue says Mountain Water Co. is still responsible for paying its taxes while the city of Missoula seeks to take over the water and supply distribution company.
Mountain Water pays an estimated $1.2 million a year in property taxes, and the company had argued that the city should take over payments since it filed an eminent domain case to take possession of it.
But Daniel Whyte of the revenue department says there’s been no change in ownership so far.
That means, under the current circumstances, the state will tell Missoula County to bill Mountain Water for property taxes.
Missoula Mayor John Engen tells the Missoulian (https://bit.ly/1hnHZBQ) that he’s pleased with the agency’s finding.
Officials with Mountain Water couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
