CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Police say an 11-year-old boy acted swiftly to alert authorities after his father and 3-year-old brother were swept down the Pawtuxent River when their kayak overturned.

The Warwick family was reunited a short time after Saturday afternoon, not long after the father and younger boy flagged down a passing motorist after making it to shore themselves.

Officials say the older boy’s own kayak also overturned as he made his way to shore and knocked on the door of a Cranston home seeking help. Police and fire departments set up a command center but 50-year-old John Barnett and his younger son soon after flagged down a car on Interstate 95.

Barnett and his sons were all treated for mild hypothermia.
