PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Pittsburgh company is launching a new bus tour that will highlight the city’s history in movies and television.
While it is better known as Steel City, Pittsburgh and nearby areas have been the backdrop for memorable films, including “The Deer Hunter,” ’’Flashdance,” ’’Night of the Living Dead,” ’’The Dark Knight Rises,” ’’The Silence of the Lambs,” and “Jack Reacher.”
“Lights, Camera, Pittsburgh!” is scheduled to launch May 31, and has the support of the region’s tourism agency, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (https://bit.ly/1rPEcCk ) reports.
“People still want to know where the restaurant was in ’Flashdance,’” said Dawn Keezer, director of the city’s film office. “They want to know where the church was from in ’The Deer Hunter.’”
Actors who have appeared in Pittsburgh-based films include Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, and Anthony Hopkins. The city’s Hill District also helped inspire the popular TV series “Hill Street Blues.”
The tours are being run by a division of the Pittsburgh Transportation Group. Popcorn will be provided and buses will stop so riders can get off and visit shooting locales.
The tours are set for select Saturdays through October. Tickets cost $30 to $40, depending on the number purchased, and part of the proceeds will go to the Pittsburgh Film Office.
VisitPittsburgh plans to promote the tour through advertising and social media and will use it to highlight the city, starting with a group of 75 travel writers arriving this month from Canada.
